GBCC Recognizes American Heart
Month
In recognition of American Heart Month,
Georgia Black Chamber partner UnitedHealthcare's
Generations of Wellness, is sharing health education tip
sheets to GBCC members and contacts. These tip
sheets provide helpful and convenient information
regarding control of factors that put people at greater
risk, such as high blood pressure, lack of exercise and
poor diet. Look for more health education
information from our partners throughout the year. The
GBCC is working hard to reach you where you are, and
offer the tools to assist in the journey to improved
health
Blood pressure
is the measurement of pressure exerted in the walls of
the blood vessels by blood pumped from the heart.
High blood pressure and hypertension indicate that your
heart is working harder than usual, putting itself
and your arteries under great strain.
Systolic pressure (upper value) is the
pressure exerted when the heart contracts and
pumps blood into the arteries. Diastolic pressure
(lower value) is the pressure exerted when the heart
expands.
An optimal blood pressure, according to
the World Health Organization, is 120/80. The normal
pulse rate for women ages 15 to 65 is 75 beats/minute,
and 62-70 beats/minute for men. For men and women age
65 or older, the normal pulse rate is between 80 and 85
beats/minute.

Good health starts in
your kitchen. Traditional soul food
is a mainstay of African American culture.
Unfortunately, the more traditional the dish, the
more likely it is high in saturated fat, trans fat,
cholesterol and salt. A steady diet of these types of
foods can pose serious challenges to your
health. All good things
in moderation. We're not asking you
to change your behavior overnight. Instead, take small
steps toward a healthier diet by learning to manage
what you already eat. Listed below are
recommendations, based on a 2000-calorie-per-day
balanced diet, that can help you enhance your overall
well-being.

High blood cholesterol can significantly
increase your risk of high blood pressure and
diabetes, both stroke factors. Although cholesterol
affects all cultural groups in the same way,
researchers estimate that up to 40 percent of African
Americans have never had their levels checked.
There may be no symptoms or warning signs of high
blood cholesterol, which raises the importance
of having your physician check for it
regularly.
A few things you
should know to maintain healthy cholesterol
levels
· The liver manufactures most of
the cholesterol that is found in your bloodstream.
However, additional cholesterol is introduced into
the bloodstream by eating foods high in saturated
fat and cholesterol. This includes animal products
like eggs, red meat and high-fat dairy products. ·
Anyone can develop high cholesterol regardless of age,
gender or race. · High levels of cholesterol in the
blood (200 - 240 mg/dL for adults) may lead to narrowing
of the arteries and has been associated with the
development of cardiovascular diseases.
These diseases can lead to heart attacks and strokes,
which are credited as the leading cause of death in
America - more than all other diseases combined.
