FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wal-Mart Announces
Jobs
and Opportunity Zone
In DeKalb County
Initiative Aims to Bolster Economic Opportunities in Communities
Surrounding the Supercenter Under Construction on Memorial Drive
(Avondale)
DeKalb County (Atlanta), Ga. (February 19, 2007) - Wal-Mart Stores,
Inc. today announced the selection of a south DeKalb County community
as a "Wal-Mart Jobs and Opportunity Zone." The designation
means that Wal-Mart is committed to supporting local businesses
and organizations surrounding the new Supercenter, currently under
construction at Memorial Drive and Columbia Drive, to spur area
job creation and economic development.
The program will provide support to local businesses by offering
advertising inside Wal-Mart's store and in local newspapers, as
well as presenting additional funding for local chambers of commerce.
The company announced eight additional Jobs and Opportunity Zones
in the following markets:
· Landover Hills, Maryland
· Richmond, California
· East Hills, Pennsylvania
· Cleveland, Ohio
· Indianapolis, Indiana
· Portsmouth, Virginia
· El Mirage, Arizona
· Sanger, California
"It's about creating opportunity beyond the four walls of
our stores," said Jimmy Clark, regional manager of Georgia
operations for Wal-Mart. "And it's about making unique contributions
to the communities we serve, the millions of customers who rely
on us and the thousands of associates we employ in communities just
like this one."
The Jobs and Opportunity Zones initiative was launched by Wal-Mart
CEO Lee Scott last year at the first store within the Chicago city
limits. In addition to creating hundreds of jobs and generating
substantial tax revenue, the company worked with local businesses
and organizations to spur job creation and economic development
around the store.
"The Wal-Mart Jobs and Opportunity Zones project is another
important step in the ongoing revitalization of this community,"
said Larry Johnson, commissioner, DeKalb County. "We are glad
Wal-Mart is here and look forward to working together to stimulate
the local economy and to help neighborhood businesses grow and expand."
The new Supercenter will replace the abandoned Avondale Mall situated
at the corner of Memorial and Columbia Drives. It is part of a mixed-used
redevelopment project in DeKalb County. Plans are under review for
the redevelopment of adjacent parcels for additional office, commercial
and residential uses.
The Zone will be anchored by the Wal-Mart Supercenter and engage
local businesses and organizations to increase economic opportunities
in surrounding neighborhoods. This initiative will create more opportunities
for small businesses to capitalize on the benefits of having a Wal-Mart
in their community.
Wal-Mart will partner with local chambers of commerce, business
groups, minority chambers of commerce and minority and women-owned
businesses within these zones to direct hundreds of thousands of
dollars in grants to these communities. The partnership will also
help these organizations located in the DeKalb County Jobs and Opportunity
Zone capitalize on the benefits of having a Wal-Mart in their community
-- benefits like increased customer flow and rising incomes due
to the new jobs created by the store opening.
"Our member businesses are certain to be buoyed by the support
the Jobs and Opportunity Zone brings to this area," said Theresa
Walker, executive director, Georgia Black Chamber of Commerce. "The
designation of south DeKalb County for this program sends a powerful
message to the people of the Atlanta metropolitan area that Wal-Mart
cares about the area."
Additional aspects of the program include Wal-Mart choosing five
small businesses in each zone for "Small Business Spotlights"
and will fund local newspaper advertising and offer free advertising
on our in-store radio network. The company will also produce an
annual "Wal-Mart Trends Report" that it will share exclusively
with the small business community.
